Important notes

  • You have two main options for how to reach the Canary Islands. You can take a flight to Tenerife South Airport (TFS) and arrive on the 2nd of October, or a flight directly to La Palma Airport, where we will meet on the 3rd.

  • Having a travel insurance that covers you for trip and flight cancellation is always the best option. Better safe than sorry!

  • Having travel insurance that covers medical expenses, trip cancellations, and unforeseen situations is highly recommended (and sometimes required). Better safe than sorry!

  • We’ll spent at least 2 whole nights out in the beach. The temperatures are pretty nice and cozy to sleep under the stars, so make sure to bring anything that will make you feel cozy as we’ll return in the morning.

Itinerary - daily schedule

ARRIVAL: All participants should arrived and be picked up from the CHQ airport or Chania city until 12pm on 25/6. If you can't find a suitable flight in the morning, it’s better to come a day before.

We will embark on a journey to Crete, landing at Chania airport, located on the northwest side of the island. Upon arrival, we will meet with other participants and start our trip. Our accommodation is Xasteria Rooms, a newly established facility near Elafonisi.

Last year’s trip

Where exactly are we going?

A packed schedule awaits us on the volcanic caldera of La Palma. During the day, we'll explore local beaches, the small and cozy town with its great restaurants and gelato places. Nature's beauty, including a waterfall and scenic viewpoints, is waiting for us. We may swim in the Atlantic Ocean, immerse ourselves in dark black volcanic sand, and savor the local cuisine. Our evening activities continue with a visit to the Roque de Los Muchachos observatory and its surroundings for breathtaking sunsets above the clouds and night photography of the darkest sky.

Staying in La Palma

In La Palma, we’re staying in beautiful apartments that provide a beautiful common garden with a large swimming pool, where you can swim during the days and have a well-deserved relaxation. Breakfast is not included in the price, but can be bought on location, and there are several restaurants located in the immediate vicinity.

What skies to expect?

Under good conditions, you are looking at a naturally dark star-studded sky with the beautiful Milky Way in an ideal position for photographers. The altitude is approximately 2500 m above sea level with the occasional cloudy inversion in the valley of the volcanic caldera is an excellent combination for night photography. Wait for those sunsets above the clouds! Phew. If there is a place reminding heaven, could be this one.

Four people in outdoor clothing and black T-shirts with constellation diagrams stand on a rocky hillside at night, gazing at the starry sky with the Milky Way galaxy prominently visible.

Equipment to bring

Photography

  • Tripod

  • Any DSLR/mirrorless camera

  • Wide-angle light lens f/2.8 and faster ( - we recommend focal lengths such as 14mm, 24mm to 35mm, best with f/1.4 if possible)

  • 2x spare battery, memory SD card

  • Intervalometer for time-lapses (if your camera hasn’t an internal one

  • Star tracker - just optional - not suitable for aurora photography (but in case you want to try, we’ll provide a few)

Clothing & gear

  • Clothing – summer and autumn – swimwear, sandals + sweatshirt, trousers, shoes, jacket, or cap. It is not as cold as at an altitude of 2,500 meters, but it can get cold as the wind blows. You can expect temperatures around 25°C (during the day) and 15°C (during the night) at sea level. However, as we mentioned we’re gonna photograph and chase the comet at high altitudes, so prepare warm clothes (temperatures can be below 10°C) to stay cozy.

  • Sleeping equipment - while chasing comet and zodiacal light, we may stay for one or two whole nights at the top of the island. We recommend You bring a sleeping pad and a good sleeping bag to be as comfortable as possible. Sleeping under the darkest sky is the most beautiful experience in the world. Don't hesitate to contact us with any questions about the equipment!

  • Headlamp – ideally with white and red colours. At night, we ONLY use the red light while taking photos. It is important (we will explain why) and at the same time, you’re respectful to the other members.

    Constantine Themelis

Born and raised in the beautiful country of Greece, Constantine developed a passion for photography at a young age. Inspired by the works of Carl Sagan and the magical world of science fiction, he embarked on a journey to capture the beauty of the night sky. After studying Computer Engineering and earning his Bachelor's and Master's degrees, Constantine joined Canon as a content creator in 2018. He has since honed his skills as an astrophotographer, using his technical knowledge and artistic vision to create stunning images of the Cosmos. In 2020, Constantine was selected as a Pathfinder ambassador for F-stop gear, an honour that recognizes his expertise and contributions to the field of landscape photography. Dedicated to sharing his knowledge and passion for the night sky, Constantine regularly leads workshops, webinars, and talks to educate others about the beauty and mysteries of astrophotography. Join him on his journey as he explores the universe and captures its wonders through the lens of his camera.

    Tomas Slovinky

Tomas was born in 1994 in Kosice. In his childhood, he was fascinated by the night sky. He was still interested in space secrets and observing interesting events like eclipses or meteor showers. He was amazed when he first pointed the lens of the old camera toward the night sky and found out how many objects the camera had captured compared to the naked eye. This brought him into the world of astrophotography. His biggest passion is photographing the night sky with nature's beauty. You can notice his images also in the magazine of BBC Sky At Night, the worldwide gallery The World At Night, International Meteor Organization magazine, and in Finnish astronomical magazine Tähdet ja avaruus. So his photographs are all around the world. He publishes photographs in the scientific and technical magazine Quark, and he is co-owner and associate director in a school-education project with the inflatable planetarium. He is also involved in creating programs and lectures at schools.
